My blog has moved

My blog has moved to a brand new website! After a couple of years blogging on this platform I felt it was necessary to take a formidable step forward and to start a proper website. It gives me new and other possibilities like showing galleries. At this moment I am not sure wether I will post anything new here, since my other website is merely focused on photography, but I will keep it online for a while.
Hope to hear from you on my website!

Book: A Year in Mornings, 3191 Miles Apart

A Year in Mornings, 3191 Miles Apart

I came across this book via another blogpost. Now I had read some comments on the internet before, but this post made me want to order the book myself and so I did. Indeed it is lovely! It is a very intimate visual account of two women's impressions in the morning, full of appreciation of the little things, everyday moments in busy lives, the mundane and the rich beauty of their habitats. There is also a lot of recognition with these images which are on the verge of the contemplative, filled with colour, space, texture and light.

Exhibition: Rob Scholte's Embroidery Show

women looking at embroidery, De Fundatie, Zwolle

A few weekends ago already I went to visit my family in Zwolle. Usually I stay over for the night, but this time I had decided to make it a daytrip and visited museum De Fundatie in the morning.

There were two exhibitions that I wanted to see: 'Wilden' and 'Rob Scholte's Embroidery show'. This blogpost is about the latter.
lots of Vermeer's Letter reading Girl

Rob Scholte is a Dutch artist who has done a few projects playing with copyright. For this project he collected various embroideries since 2005, handmade works on which women and men (!) often lovingly spent many hours  stitch by stitch. These works have often been disposed of for nothing or just a little by heirs of the makers. Scholte evidently sees it as his mission to give credit to these Embroidery-works and decided to frame them back to front, sign and show them to the public.

Rob Scholte really collected a lot of works and arranged them by theme. It was fun to see the multiple variations of the same original, not only the different colours and hues but also to see how the different makers dealt with finishing with the different threads. The exhibition gave a lot of responses from the viewers, too. I overheard a few little conversations, varying from admiration for the patience to disbelief that people decorated their walls with this kind of work. The Embroidery Show will run until 18 September, 2016.

Nomination on Instagram

I was nominated on Instagram as #orangewednesday_best by 'Colors of the week.' Together with two other images mine evidently was liked very much.  I have followed this hashtag for a while now, it still is a lot of fun to capture colours. Look here for the other entries.
The photo was taken with my iPhone, just in my street on a Summer's eve.

Non-published portraits

Emily
Emily
At the moment I am working hard on my new website, I would like to launch it at the end of July or beginning of August. Most of the time I'm going through my archives looking for material and I came across a few photographs that I hadn't published before. The image above is of my niece Emily (isn't she lovely?) and only taken yesterday, so that one is quite new. The other images go back further in time.

In the shop with art supplies

I went with my eldest niece to the "very beautiful shop where they have fantastic stuff" last Saturday in Zwolle. "You want to buy the whole shop", I also heard saying. I had no idea what to expect, but after arriving it turned out to be a shop with art supplies. And yes indeed, I did want to buy the whole shop. But of course that was impossible, so I bought a few special markers and took this shot of colored frames.

Red computer cable

Prachtig!
red computer cable
I walked into an empty office space today and was struck by this simple image: a red computer cable on the floor. If ou say the words out loud you might think "naw, were you stopped by that?" But for me is about the colour red, the way the cable lies on the ground and the texture of the floor. Wonderful!

NDSM wharf: textures

red paint on old concrete

We konden ons hart ophalen. Hier komen we zeker nog eens terug.
Hierbij wat textuur opnames.

Last Sunday K. and I took our bikes on the ferry to Amsterdam North. It was a beautiful Summer's day with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures and we felt like hanging out at Pllek. When we arrived there we found that Over het IJ Festival had taken over the whole area. That looked very festive, but we felt more like space and quiet and walked around the terrain of the old NDSM wharfs. That was fabulous to capture, all those colours, textures, patterns and space! We could eat our heart out. We will definately come back to this area.
Here are some captures of textures.

Summers in France / zomers in Frankrijk

small street in Crépy-en-Valois, France

Summer is not really settling in over here: we've had a few warm, sunny days, but lately we've had much rain and temperatures dropped to Fall-level.

This year I am not going on holidays: my boyfriend wants to move to Amsterdam and has to save money for his leap, I have just spent my vacation money on a twin bed for the first time in my life. Man, that is expensive! So, again, like a few years ago, I am going to stay in Holland on a staycation. Read all about that in this blogpost.

Lees hier alles over mijn vorige 'thuisvakantie'.

To get into some kind of holiday mood I delved into my digital archives for photos from previous holidays in France. A few images kept popping up in my head the past few weeks. They were all taken in the period before I had started this blog, between 2009-2011.

Love-hate Helmut Newton

Yves Saint Laurent, French Vogue, Rue Aubriot, Paris 1975, ©Helmut Newton / Helmut Newton Estate
Helmut Newton, you either love his work or you don't. FOAM currently has a major exhibition on the renowned photographer Helmut Newton, who was originally German but fled his country because of the rapid rise of national socialism in 1938.
With a few girl friends of mine I went to see this retrospective which took over the whole museum and showed a wide variety of his work. We loved his fashion photography, there is often lots of humor and interaction between the people in the photos. Also, the images were very stylish like the photo above and gave a good impression of the fashion of bygone periods like the seventies.
Self portrait with wife and models, Vogue Studio, Paris 1981, ©Helmut Newton / Helmut Newton Estate
We were not too keen though on some of his other work which portrays barely clothed women with perfect bodies on high heels. To us, they were distant, somewhat cold women without personalities nor hearts. Perhaps you feel differently about it, but these photos seemed to be made for men and we as female lookers were not able to relate with any of these beauties. And indeed, according to this article he wasn't interested in people, he was not interested in soul. On the other hand, I am interested in people. I would like to see a spark, a glimpse of their characters or souls even if it is just very subtle.
The exhibition is running until 4 September 2016.

Onze eerste fotografie workshop / our first photography workshop

yogamats

Last Sunday was our big day: our first photography workshop took place! We had planned, promoted and prepared it a few times before and then we had to cancel because of lack of participants. It can be quite challenging to keep up your spirits and to keep trying.
Galerie Beeldend Gesproken, Amsterdam

We had rented a beautiful space in Galerie | Kunstuitleen Beeldend Gesproken which is situated in De Hallen, Amsterdam. The duration of the rent determined the content of the workshop: originally we had set it up in combination with yoga, but that was too tight in timing. So we choose to start up the lesson with meditation.
prepping

The workshop is about a sort of meditative photography: to become still inside by ways of meditation and then putting your intention on a certain field of perception from the inner stillness, in this case we focused on pattern.
participant photographing pattern

After the meditation and short explanation we went outdoors for a grounding exercise and a few visual exercises. After the exercises the participants hit the road with their intention on pattern. We had scoured the area a few times beforehand and seen that there were plenty of patterns to be discovered.
another participant photographing patterns

After an hour of photographing we would go indoors again to load our photos onto our laptops and to select 10 pictures which we then showed to each other. That produced some surprising images; in an hour you can walk slowly in and around De Hallen and see a world of patterns. That became evident in the evaluation: the participants were surprised that one could look at the world in that way. They valued the workshop and would certainly consider coming back.
See below for some examples of pattern:
