Koningsdag / King's Day

little girl with frog
King's Day has traditionally been a day for us to put on a silly costume and having fun with the people that would pass by our lounge-for-a-day. My friend V. always makes our costumes and C. and I deliver our input regarding styling, accessoires and the interior of our lounge.

We are not very commercial (and that's an understatement), but we are always trying to figure out a great revenue model to compensate the cost of it all. This time V. made lots of pillboxes (little hats) people could buy for EUR 4. Needless to say that we made heaps of money.

The weather forecast was really bad: lots of rain, overcast skies and low temperatures were predicted. And boy, yes it was cold, but when the sun came out we could take our off our fake furs so that wasn't too bad. And it hardly rained.

Anyways, we had lots of fun as you can see. I usually prefer being in one place and then have the crowds passing by. It is so much more relaxing than walking around all day which we have done in the past.
(half) empty cans of beer

Is it really Spring?

pink blossoms
Oh yes, it's definitely Spring! Although it's way too cold for the time of year, nature can't control itself any longer. Trees are bursting, brushes are flourishing and flowers pop out of the ground left and right. Are you enjoying these riches, too?
young red leaves

Sunset over the IJ

sunset over EYE
'Waiting for a friend', could also have been the title of this post. A friend had asked me to meet her one of these evenings at EYE, she had plans for setting up a business and wanted to interview me on the subject. EYE is located at the IJ, a beautiful venue and I hadn't been over there so I decided to come a little earlier so I could have a look around with my camera.

As it turned out we didn't meet that evening, but I enjoyed myself immensely looking at the view: the water, the people and the sun slowly setting.
EYE is located behind Amsterdam Central Station, easily accessible by ferry. EYE is a film museum, cinema an an excellent meeting spot.
reflection of the IJ

candidate and his assistants
I was asked to shoot the promotion of a colleague's husband, Johannes Bijlsma. He is from another faculty (Law) so I was surrounded by strangers for the first time during a shoot. I notice that every time I do these shoots I become more comfortable in my trade and I put myself close to the stage if necessary. The photo above for example was taken in the so-called sweat-room: the preparation and changing room for the defendant and his assistants. That was the first time I ever set foot in that room. It must have been a be nerve-wrecking moment for the defendant, but he let me in and was even willing to pose.

Yoga and Art (Yoku): water

Kundalini yoga: tuning in with our inner selves
For the first time in over a year I went to Yoku again and it was great as usual. The workshops are now organized in series of five evenings and each workshop deals with one element. Last night we dove into the element of 'water'. Water is related to the second chakra en represents our emotions which can flow through our body. Every workshop will be hosted on a different location and last night we found ourselves on a living boot in the Amstel. The whole evening we felt the boat moving and the rain falling on the roof, we were surrounded by water! We started up with a powerful Kundalini session taught by Vir Kaur.

After the yoga session we had a little tea break during which the room of the living boat was 'transformed' into an art studio. We all got our own board, paper, paint, water, sponge and cloth. We were instructed to wet our sheet completely with water on one side, then had to turn it over and made the downside wet also, ironing away the bubbles at the same time. With our brush dipped in blue watercolor and made long and steady horizontal strokes from the bottom up to the top until the whole sheet was blue. Then we were instructed to look longer at it and to accentuate the movements we perceived in it, movements related to the theme water. After following those movements for a while, we could play around with the other colours. I made half moon shapes in blue, added green algae coiling out of the bottom of the sea and added red fish that swam by rapidly. Pictured above is the wet piece, I don't have the dry sheet at home yet. I hope that I will be able to show that to you (and myself) soon, I am rather curious at it myself.

Last weekend I went with my sister to museum De Fundatie in Zwolle to visit the exhibition Dutch Identity on current Dutch portrait photography. The exhibition had a varied collection on display. "What makes the Dutch portrait so special?" was the central question according to the flyer. Photographs of 25 renowned photographers are shown in the museum and there is indeed a lot to see in that field. Not everything was appealing to me, but the photos shown here are. What stroke me particularly was that almost all photographs originated from a thought or an idea, thoughts that I could not pick up most of the time.

A double portrait of two sisters wearing a burka, is that even a portrait, was a question. You can see subtle differences between the two in the black robes. The exhibition is ending on 17 April 2016.
